Apologies in advance, this might get a little uncomfortable for you.
It’s time to take a close look at where you live. What does your bedroom look like? Your closet? Your garage? Your apartment or house?
Is it starting to look more and more like a storage unit?
I totally get it. Life happens, and before you know it, closets are overflowing, shelves are crammed, and your “spare room” is now completely off limits.
You’ve got too much stuff!
But what if all that stuff wasn’t just collecting dust, it was collecting value? That’s right, you can turn your clutter into cash!
So...Why Bother Decluttering?
Yes, decluttering means freeing up physical space. But, you're also freeing up head space too! When you get rid of things you don’t need, you make room for fresh ideas, new opportunities, and, honestly, you enjoy reducing all that chaos.
And when you sell your unwanted stuff, you clear out your living space and put more money in your wallet.
It’s time to turn “I might need this someday…” into “wahoo, I just made money!”
Step 1: Find Items To Sell
First things first, you’ll need to find what you’re going to sell. Instead of tackling your entire house (hello, stress!), start with one area. One closet. One drawer. Or that one junk corner we all pretend doesn’t exist. But we know it’s there because it keeps getting bigger and bigger.
Break that one area down into bite-sized tasks, and suddenly, it feels a lot more doable. Plus, you’ll get that “I’m so productive” buzz every time you finish a section.
As you go, keep an eye out for anything clean, functional, and in decent shape. Don’t toss the slightly broken stuff just yet! That old DVD player might be junk to you, but someone out there is hunting for spare parts.
A quick Google search for similar items will help you figure out if it’s a hot commodity or a “free with pickup” situation.
Wait, where are my manners? Let me introduce myself...
Hey there, I'm Christine, the gal behind Creative Wealth Pathways! I used to wonder if any of this online income stuff works for regular people. It does! So I created this blog to hand you the tips I learned the hard way.
Here's where I'd point you next:

Step 2: The Where’s-Waldo of Selling Platforms
Now that you’ve got your pile of sellable goodies, where should they go? Please don’t just put them in a new junk drawer!
Instead, start researching platforms for selling:
OfferUp: Great for local items and really easy to use.
Facebook Marketplace: Ideal for big stuff like furniture or tools (and no shipping hassle!).
eBay: Perfect for collectibles, gadgets, or anything someone might geek out over.
Poshmark: Can work if you have barely-worn clothes, shoes, or handbags.
TheRealReal: Great for luxury handbags, watches, or designer clothes, just be ready to share the profits with the platform.
Garage Sales: My personal preference! They take some planning but they’re so effective for when you want to offload a bunch of stuff at once. Warning: you may need coffee and patience for ultra-thrifty bargain hunters.
Still not sure? Specialized platforms like Reverb (for musical instruments) or BookScouter (for books) are great options for niche items. The trick is matching what you have to the right audience.
Step 3: Prep for Sale
Presentation is everything, especially when selling online. A little bit of effort up front can get it sold fast.
Clean and repair: If needed, wash clothes, polish jewelry, and wipe down dusty electronics. Just make sure that everything looks visibly clean so that you don’t give potential buyers a reason to back out.
Photos that pop: Natural light, uncluttered backgrounds, and a few angles go a long way. I once staged a room with several items that I wanted to sell quickly. I turned up the lights, took photos from multiple angles, and one woman wound up buying everything!
Descriptions that sell: Be honest but detailed. Don’t just say “lamp.” Instead try “Modern desk lamp, dark brown, tall, fully functional, minor scratch on the base.” Buyers love having the details up front.
Batch it up: Got lots of books or a bunch of baby clothes? Bundle similar items together for a fair price to sell more items even faster.
Step 4: Come Up with Realistic Prices
Pricing can feel tricky, but it doesn’t have to be. What is your intent here? Are you trying to have enough for retirement or are you just offloading some items to clear out your house and are fine to make a few bucks while you’re at it?
My point is that you’re not likely to get $1,000 for a 20” used TV.
To get realistic prices, start by checking out similar items. Platforms like eBay have a “sold items” filter so you can see what people actually paid, not just what sellers wished for.
A good tip? Price slightly higher than your rock-bottom number. Most buyers will haggle anyways so this strategy gives you some wiggle room up front.
And if someone wants to buy multiple items, offer them a bundle discount. They feel like they got a good deal, and you clear out more items in one go.
Step 5: Sell Safely (Because Stranger Danger is Real)
Safety first, always. Unfortunately, there are some bad apples out there.
If you’re meeting buyers in person, pick a public spot like a busy parking lot or, better yet, a police station (a lot of them even encourage it!). If that's awkward, bring a family member or a friend along. Or at least let someone know where you’ll be.
Online payments? Stick to trusted platforms like PayPal or Venmo. No checks, no “oops, I accidentally sent extra money” scams, and definitely no “paying with gift cards.”
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just Google online payment scams. Some of them are extremely sophisticated.
Shipping something? Use tracking and insured shipping for pricey items. It’s worth the extra effort, believe me.
Step 6: Stay Organized
It’s easy to get caught up in the mess and get overwhelmed, especially if you have a lot of stuff. But stay organized and you’ll be just fine.
Maybe try to sort into three zones:
- Ready to Sell: Clean, photographed, and priced.
- Work in Progress: Stuff you’re still cleaning or listing.
- Sold and Shipped: Items waiting to meet their new owners.
Keep a spreadsheet or simple notebook to track what you’ve sold, where, and for how much. Watching your totals grow is surprisingly satisfying (and super motivating).

Step 7: Turn Decluttering into Cash (and Fun)
By now, you’ve got the tools to clear out your house and fill your piggy bank. Make it fun!
Set a goal for how much money you want to make or how much space you want to reclaim. What are you going to do with the cash? Pay down a debt? Start a new business? Buy more stuff??
How often do you want to, or need to, repeat this process. Once a year? Once a month?
TIP: Keep your eyes open for surprising finds. That old vase from Granny Beth? Turns out, it might be vintage (and valuable!).
