I used to think getting clients in person meant you had to be that girl who could walk into a room, charm everyone instantly, and pitch herself like a Shark Tank finalist.

That’s not me!

But I’ve learned that you can absolutely grow your business offline, even if you’re more chill than chatty.

In-person client attraction doesn’t have to be awkward, salesy, or forced. It can be fun. It can even feel... natural. The key is being prepared, staying open, and knowing where and how to show up.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get clients in person. And...it’s quite simple!

Know Who You’re Trying to Attract

Before we get into the where and how, let’s talk about the who.

You don’t need a long-winded customer avatar here, but you do need to be clear on a few things.

  • What problem do you solve?
  • Who’s likely to need or want that help?
  • Where do those people hang out?

Once I stopped trying to be everything to everyone and started focusing on my people, doing this in person made way more sense. I knew what conversations to be a part of. I knew how to bring up what I do without sounding like I was selling.

Pro Tip: Keep a simple elevator pitch ready. Mine was something like, “I help small business owners create branding that actually gets them clients.” Clear. Quick. No pressure.

Be Strategic About Where You Spend Time

Being everywhere isn’t the move, you want to be where potential clients already are.

Think of this like being at the right party. Here are places that worked well for me (and might for you too).

  • Local networking events: Yes, they can seem cringey at first. But when you find the right group, people in your industry or adjacent industries, it can lead to real connections.
  • Workshops & classes: Teach one, attend one, or both. Position yourself as someone who adds value.
  • Coworking spaces: These are goldmines for meeting other entrepreneurs.
  • Pop-ups, markets, or expos: Especially if your business is product-based.
  • Gyms, coffee shops, salons: Casual tall. Some of my best leads started from regular conversations at a class or while waiting on a latte.

The goal here is proximity. Be around the people you want to help.

Wait, where are my manners? Let me introduce myself...

Hey there, I'm Christine, the gal behind Creative Wealth Pathways! I used to wonder if any of this online income stuff works for regular people. It does! So I created this blog to hand you the tips I learned the hard way.

Here's where I'd point you next:

Talk Like a Human, Not a Sales Page

I used to overthink how I introduced myself. I thought I needed to be super polished or impressive. But people respond way better to a normal human.

If someone asks what you do, speak plainly.

  • “I run a service that helps people get better systems in place for their business.”
  • “I design websites for small businesses.”
  • “I help brides plan stress-free weddings.”
  • I <<fill in the blank>>.”

Keep it light. Be curious about them too! Real conversations are better than rehearsed sales pitches.

And if the mood is right, follow it up with something like,

"If you ever need help with that, I’d be happy to chat or send you more info."

That’s it! No awkward handoffs.

Make Yourself Easy to Remember

Here’s where I went wrong early on, I had some great conversations...but people forgot me.

You want to leave a little footprint behind, something people can refer back to.

Ways to do that:

  • Have a short, clean business card or digital contact card
  • Link to your Instagram or portfolio (bonus if it looks good on mobile)
  • Use a memorable brand name or tag line
  • Wear or carry something distinct (a cute tote with your brand name, a branded notebook, etc.)

Sometimes it’s the follow-up text or email that seals the deal. Don't wait forever! Reach out within 24–48 hours. Try this:

"So great chatting with you yesterday! Here’s my page if you ever want to learn more: [link]"

Keep it breezy, helpful, and low-stakes.

Offer Something That’s of Value

Not everyone you meet is ready to hire you right now, and that’s ok!

What can you offer that:

  • Helps them now
  • Builds trust
  • Keeps you top of mind?

Here are some examples:

  • A free resource (guide, checklist, sample, etc.)
  • A quick tip or trick related to their question
  • A discounted introductory offer or first-time service

Give a little value up front, and people will remember you.

Let Your Confidence Guide You

I used to think confidence meant being obnoxious, outgoing, and extroverted. But the best kind of confidence, especially in person, is the kind that’s balanced.

You know what you offer and you believe in it. You don’t need to push. You just need to share when it makes sense, and be open.

If you ever feel awkward, remember this. Most people are thinking about themselves. They’re not judging you because you’re not even on their radar! They’re hoping to connect with someone who “gets it.”

And you might be the person they didn’t know they needed.

Say It Out Loud to Yourself

Before I started landing clients in person, I practiced saying what I do in the mirror. Sounds cheesy, but it helps.

Try these:

  • “I help people simplify their social media strategy.”
  • “I run a business that helps women create passive income online.”

The more you say it, the less you’ll stumble when someone asks. Say it until you own it.

Always Be the Connector

Even if someone’s not a fit for your services, if you can connect them to someone or something useful, they’ll remember you. It’s not always about your bottom line in that exact moment. This is how you grow your network.

Like this:

  • “Oh! You’re looking for a photographer? I just met someone who’s amazing.”
  • “You’d love this resource I just used, it made onboarding new clients way easier.”

That kind of generosity comes back around. And when someone does need what you offer? You’ll be first in line.

Leverage the Power of Referrals

Once I started telling people, “Hey, I’m growing my client base right now. If you know anyone who might need [insert service], I’d love a warm introductions,” things started to move faster.

Your hairstylist, your friend’s cousin, your old coworker, they all know people. People trust people they already know. And a recommendation from a mutual connection is way more powerful than a random ad or cold email.

Say it clearly. Make it easy. Then follow through.

Treat Every Interaction Like It Matters (Because It Does)

You never know who you’re talking to, or who they’re connected to.

I’ve had casual chats turn into dream clients. I’ve had referrals show up six months later from a random conversation at an event I almost skipped.

Every smile, every intro, every short conversation plants a seed. Some take time to grow, but when they do? It makes it all worth it.

How to Get Clients In Person FAQs

What if I'm a total introvert and hate networking events?
No need to work the whole room. Focus on having one or two genuine, one-on-one conversations. Being a good listener makes people trust you way faster than trying to be the loudest person in the room.
How do I explain what I do without freezing up?
Keep it simple and plain: "I help [who you help] with [specific problem]." Practice saying it a few times at home so it rolls off your tongue naturally without being a rehearsed sales pitch.
When’s the best time to follow up with someone I met?
Within 24 to 48 hours while the chat is still fresh. Send a quick, low-pressure message saying, "Great meeting you yesterday! Here’s my page if you ever want to stay in touch."
Do I really need old-school paper business cards?
Not necessarily. A clean digital contact card, pulling up your Instagram handle, or simply texting them your link right then and there works great…and it won't get lost at the bottom of their bag.
