I’ve now covered the typical advice about getting clients. Get online. Be active on social media. Network. Ask for referrals. Build partnerships. Don’t get me wrong, these are all solid strategies (I mean, I do recommend all of them)!

But what happens when you’ve already tapped into those channels, and you’re ready for something new?

Good news for you, because that’s where creativity steps in!

Finding clients doesn’t always have to follow the traditional playbook. In fact, some of the best opportunities can come from surprising places, the ones most people overlook.

Are you wanting to get a step ahead of your competitors? Then it’s time to read on for a few “other methods” that can work just as well (if not better).

Tip #1 - Speaking and Teaching Opportunities

Here’s the thing about teaching. Not only does it help others learn, it also shows the world that you know your stuff. When you step into the role of teacher, you automatically position yourself as the authority.

How do you do it? Head up workshops in your local community, conduct a free class at a coworking space, or even an online mini-course. People who register are already interested in your topic, which means they’re essentially pre-qualified leads.

Think about it. You’re giving away real value, you’re helping people solve a problem, and then naturally, some will think, “Wow, if this is what I get for free, imagine what it’s like to work with them.”

You can also be on a panel and give guest lectures. Being featured alongside other experts or invited to speak at schools and organizations is another way to boost your credibility. You’re no longer just another face in the crowd, you’re the one people turn their chairs to listen to.

Tip #2 - Media and PR Features

Getting clients through the media might sound fancy, but it’s a lot more accessible than most people realize.

Start with podcasts. No, you don’t need to host your own (that’s a full-time gig on its own). Instead, be a guest on shows that your ideal clients already listen to. Podcasters are often looking for new voices, and if you pitch them with something valuable to say, you’re in.

Guest articles and op-eds are another option. Write for an online publication in your industry or even your local newspaper. When people see your name attached to helpful insights in a respected outlet, it builds up trust.

For traditional PR, you can go for a feature in a magazine, blog, or even go for a spot on TV. Even a bit of local press coverage makes a big difference, because people equate media mentions with legitimacy.

But don’t sit around waiting for opportunities to fall into your lap. You’ll need to be proactive, reach out, and pitch yourself.

Wait, where are my manners? Let me introduce myself...

Hey there, I'm Christine, the gal behind Creative Wealth Pathways! I used to wonder if any of this online income stuff works for regular people. It does! So I created this blog to hand you the tips I learned the hard way.

Tip #3 - Strategic Volunteering

You’ve heard the saying, “Give and you shall receive.” Well, this applies to business too.

Volunteering your skills for causes you care about is both rewarding on a personal level and it can open doors to clients who might otherwise be out of reach. Imagine offering free branding work for a nonprofit, or donating your photography services to a community event.

The leaders involved in these kinds of organizations are often well-connected, and when they see the quality of your work, they’ll talk about it. That kind of organic word-of-mouth is priceless.

The trick is to volunteer strategically. Choose opportunities that match with your ideal audience. If you’re a fitness coach, I think volunteering at a local wellness fair makes sense.

If you’re a designer, offering to create visuals for a charity gala can get your name in front of a whole new crowd.

Tip #4 - Creative Collaborations (Beyond Partnerships)

Now, collaborations might sound similar to my previous post on partnerships, but I want you to think outside the box here.

Instead of formal, long-term partnerships, try short-term, creative collaborations. For example, bundle your services with someone else’s for a special offer. A wedding photographer could team up with a florist for a package deal. A career coach could work with a resume writer for a “land your dream job” bundle.

Or go with pop-up experiences. These are temporary, experiential events that bring people face-to-face with what you do. Imagine a life coach hosting a pop-up “Ask Me Anything” booth in a trendy locale, or a nutritionist offering mini-consults at a farmer’s market.

Tip #5 - Host Your Own Networking Circles

Networking events are everywhere, but here’s the secret most people miss. The person who organizes them often gets the biggest benefit.

So instead of waiting for the next mixer or business breakfast, why not create your own circle? No need to be overly formal with it. You could host a monthly mastermind at your favorite coffee shop, invite a few people for brunch, or organize a themed meetup.

By being the one who gathers others together, you become the connector. People start associating you with opportunities, introductions, and influence. And take a wild guess who they’ll think of when they need the service you provide? Exactly.

Tip #6 - Client Loyalty Growth Strategies

Sometimes the easiest way to get new clients is through the ones you already have.

One idea is to create a “client alumni club.” Think of it as an exclusive community for past clients where they still get access to certain perks. Not only does this keep you top-of-mind, but those alumni can also become your best advocates.

Another fun approach is bring-a-friend opportunities. Invite current clients to events, classes, or previews where they can bring someone along. Their plus-one might just be your next client.

And never underestimate the impact of VIP treatment. When clients feel special, they talk about you.

Simple gestures, like sending a thoughtful gift, offering surprise bonuses, or remembering birthdays, can turn clients into loyal fans who’ll naturally refer you.

Tip #7 - Public Challenges & Competitions

People love a good challenge. They also love a little competition. So why not use that to your advantage?

Host a themed challenge that ties directly to your work. If you’re a wellness coach, run a 30-day health reset. If you’re a designer, create a “mini-brand makeover” challenge. The whole point is to get people actively involved with your expertise.

Competitions work too. If you’re a writing coach, hold a short story contest. A marketing consultant could run a “best campaign idea” contest. These experiences not only engage people but also put you in the spotlight as the person leading the fun.

And when participants see results (or want more), they’re likely to become you’re next paying clients.

Tip #8 - Writing a Short Book or Guide

There’s something magical about saying, “I wrote the book on it.” Even if it’s a short book.

It could be a 40-page guide, a polished PDF, or a short ebook. The point is that it positions you as the expert. People naturally respect the author.

Distribute it through Amazon, your website, or even at live events. It’s both a marketing tool and a lead magnet that keeps working long after you’ve written it.

Plus, think about the shareability factor. One guide or book with your branding can easily be passed around, and you never know whose hands it might land in.

Tip #9 - Trade Shows & Pop-Up Booths

When you think of trade shows, you might think of big corporations with oversized vendor booths. But trade shows can be goldmines for home entrepreneurs and small businesses too.

The idea is to get creative with your booth. Please don’t just sit there looking miserable with business cards and a banner. Make it fun interactive! Offer free mini-consultations, host a giveaway, or set up a live demo. People love engaging experiences.

And again, it doesn’t always have to be a massive industry expo. Local fairs, lifestyle markets, or niche conventions can be just as effective. Sometimes these smaller events give you more face time with potential clients.

BONUS TIP: Reverse Prospecting

I think we have time for one more way to get clients. Bear with me for this twist. Instead of chasing clients, have them come to you.

Huh??

This is called reverse prospecting. It’s where you create an application process where clients have to apply to work with you. It flips the script and instantly raises your perceived value.

When people feel they need to qualify for your service, they’ll take it more seriously. You’re creating an exclusivity factor. It also helps filter out the tire-kickers who aren’t really ready to commit (and ultimately pay you what you’re worth).

You can set this up with a simple online form, a waitlist, or a consultation request process. Not only does it attract motivated clients, but it also saves you from wasting time on people who aren’t the right fit.

How to Get Clients in Creative Places FAQs

Do I need a massive following to get booked on podcasts or speaking gigs?
Nope! Hosts care about whether your topic helps their listeners, not your follower count. Pitch one specific problem you can solve for them, and you're good.
How do I volunteer my skills without getting taken advantage of?
Set clear boundaries from day one. Define the exact scope of the project so you don't get trapped in endless free work, and focus on groups where real decision-makers hang out.
Will reverse prospecting work if I'm brand new?
Yes! An application form is to make sure you're a good fit. Asking 2–3 simple questions before a call filters out tire-kickers immediately.
What’s the fastest method to try if I’m short on time?
Host a casual coffee meetup or put together a quick, high-value cheat sheet. Being the person who brings people together gives you authority with very little prep.

Can You Get Clients in Places You'd Never Think to Look?

Of course you can!

Paying clients are everywhere, don’t let the naysayers tell you different. Sometimes you just have to look beyond the obvious routes to find them.

Because at the end of the day, the clients you’re looking for are looking for you too. Sometimes, you just need to meet them halfway in places you haven’t tried yet. The more creative you get, the more you’ll stand out.
